2013 Marketing & IT Job Market Report

2013 was a year of visible growth for the marketing, creative and IT job market. Not only is Minnesota’s unemployment rate all the way down to 4.6%, in November alone, MN added over 2,400 private sector jobs. As a marketing and creative staffing agency, we have an inside take on the creative job market and are pleased with the trends we have seen in 2013.

Even though we saw a decrease in the total positions we filled in 2012 to 2013, we are on track for our best year in business ever. This means that contracts are turning into full-time positions and the duration of contract work is longer, which essentially means less turnover.

What this signifies is that our clients are looking for more long-term talent, instead of contracts that only last a few weeks or months. Employers are investing more time in contract employees and contracts  continue to be extended month after month.

Additionally, there are several positions in our industry that are on the upswing. The following positions were part of a small group of occupations that grew more than 7% from 2012-2013 and are expected to grow even more in 2014.

• • Software developers: Over 1 million employed in 2013 and grew 11% over the past 3 years.
  • Marketing specialists: 428K employed in 2013 and is up 14% since 2010.
  • Web developers: Total employment in 2013 was 137K and grew 7% over the past 3 years.
  • Event planners: total employment 87K in 2013 and grew 14% since 2010.

Additionally, according to a recent LinkedIn article, most of the top 25 skills that got people hired in 2013 were in the marketing, creative and IT industry.

Within the marketing, creative and IT job market alone, positions are growing and skills are in high demand. Based on the growth and trends we’ve seen in 2013 for the marketing and creative job industry, it seems we’re on track for 2014 to be an even better year.
