So you’ve recently been promoted to a leadership position, and you’re thrilled. That nice bump in your pay and more benefits means your hard work has finally paid off. You have every reason to rejoice and you should, because you deserve it!

When the rejoicing is over though, and the time comes for you to move into your new role, there are some things to consider. While you were promoted for being good at a certain role, leading people requires a very different set of skills. To migrate into your new role successfully it’s important you come prepared, so here are a few tips you can follow to start off right.

Find good training

Before you take on this new role, find some good resources that can help you prepare for the new responsibilities you will face as a leader. Doing a quick Google search will lead you to plenty of online seminars, videos and countless articles on what it takes to be a leader. Harvard Business Publishing and American Management Association are two great resources to start with if you aren’t sure where to look, among many others according to this training industry ranking.

Seek out a mentor

Whether it be a family member, a friend or colleague familiar with being a leader it’s good to have someone to go to for advice and counseling. Getting advice from someone who has been-there-done-that can prepare you for possible roadblocks. Struggling to find a mentor in your immediate network? The Minnesota Career Development Association has a mentor program you can sign up for to find the perfect mentor for you.

Plan with your team

Start off on the right foot with your team. Have an introductory meeting getting to know each other and addressing your goals, expectations and the strategies you want to use to accomplish projects. This will open up communication lines from the beginning, and is a great way to get everyone on the same page. Come prepared with some questions that you want to ask your team related to work expectations and make sure each of them has a chance to ask their own questions.

Set the example

You were promoted because your work is something to be admired, so use this to set the example in your work environment. Your attitude, work ethic and the way you behave toward people will be what your team members learn to expect of themselves. Keep a positive attitude and show strength in the face of struggle. Your team members will respect you for this and learn to follow suite.

While taking on a new leadership role can be a daunting task, it is also an incredibly rewarding opportunity that will allow you to develop new skills and open yourself up professionally. Following the steps above will help you be better prepared for stepping into your new role.
