Minneapolis/St. Paul Marketing & Creative 2010 Recap

Celarity has staffed marketing, creative, and interactive positions this year in contract, project, and full time roles. In 2010, we saw a 31% increase in requests for these positions over 2009. With overall hiring up this year, companies showed a preference for hiring contract and contract to hire roles over direct hire, hedging their risk due to the uncertain direction of the economy.

Which Marketing and Creative positions were most in demand in 2010?

17% of the contract positions requested this year were for Copywriters/Editors and Web Designers. Most of the copywriting positions required experience writing for the web, which makes sense considering the increased demand for Web Developers/Designers.

Moving into 2011, what positions do we expect to see more call for?

Staffing Industry Analysts predict a 9% increase in revenue nationwide in 2011 for marketing and creative staffing.  This will bring revenue for our industry back to 2008 levels.

With much of 2009 spent learning about social media, 2010 was spent implementing social media marketing plans. Some of our clients have added departments with positions such as “Social Media Manager” and “Social Community Manager”.  We anticipate this trend to continue along with even more requests for social strategist roles.

Based on client requests and the Twin Cities marketing, creative, and interactive association event topics from this year (MIMA, AMA, AIGA, PRSA, Ad Fed etc), look for an increase in SEO/SEM, Web Copywriters, and Social Media positions.  With SEO/SEM becoming increasingly important, search ability and increased interaction with customers through online media will continue to be a top priority into 2011.
