Creative Mornings: Featuring – Ranee, Aparna, & Ashwini Ramaswamy
October 18 @ 8:30 am - 10:00 am
Ranee, Aparna, and Ashwini Ramaswamy are the mother-daughter trio behind Minneapolis’ renowned Ragamala Dance Company. In their talk, they discuss their artistic process – which forges together ancestry and continuity – and the ebb and flow of their intergenerational creative partnership.
Ragamala Dance Company was founded in 1992 by Ranee Ramaswamy. Under the direction of Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy (Co-Artistic Directors, 2018 Guggenheim Fellows), and recently joined by Ashwini Ramaswamy (Choreographic Associate), Ragamala’s work is described as “soulful, imaginative and rhythmically contagious” (The New York Times), and “the standard-bearer of a singularly successful kind of hybridity” (The Huffington Post). Each has her own perspective on cultural hybridity and how to approach the South Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam as a living, breathing language with which to speak about the contemporary human experience.
The Ramaswamys tour extensively, highlighted by performances at and commissions from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center, the American Dance Festival, the Harris Theater of Chicago, the Music Center of Los Angeles, the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, University Musical Society at the University of Michigan, the Just Festival (Edinburgh, U.K.) the Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), the National Centre for Performing Arts (Mumbai), among others. Upcoming Twin Cities premieres and performances: Let the Crows Come at The Lab Theater (November 8/9, 2019), and Written in Water at the Ordway Center for Performing Arts (February 15, 2020)
