UXPA: Escape from Flatland – UX Meets Industrial Design
June 11 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
User experience owes its status as a mainstream field to an explosion of digital technology. Many UX professionals spend their time exclusively on design for screens, become fluent in UI conventions, and think about their methods through that rectangular lens.
So what happens when you need to create a thing? The industrial design adds another literal dimension to being user-centered. How do you even start to translate user needs into a physical object? What does prototyping look like? What else does a designer have to think about?
In this online discussion, Matt Goulet and Mary Donnelly will discuss the partnership of industrial design and user experience in the creation of medical devices. They’ll talk about some common principles that drive what they do, the unique considerations for the research and design of physical products, and how the two roles can work together effectively.
P.S.: We’re aware of the irony of communicating through a digital interface in order to encourage the discussion of UX outside its confines, so don’t bother pointing it out.
- Matt Goulet is the chief industrial designer at Primordial Soup, where he leads a small team of industrial designers. Matt has 25 years of industrial design experience in a wide range of industries and has been focused on the development of a medical device for the last decade.
- Mary Donnelly is a principal consultant at Fathom Consulting. She has deep experience researching the needs of clinicians and patients to inform the design of medical technology.
