CGI stands for “computer-generated imagery.” CGI Artists create still and moving images and visual effects using computers. These images could be anything from characters to environments to special effects.
Although CGI includes many specialties in computer graphics like 2-D and 3-D animation or special effects, CGI is most often a term used to refer to 3-D animations created for things like film, TV, or video games.
What does a CGI Artist do, typically?
Design 3D Models
A CGI Artist builds 3D models of products, environments, and more. They use their ability to create photo realistic materials, lighting, and rendered images for various uses including marketing and advertisements.
These specialists must be detail-oriented, adhere to deadlines, and manage their time across multiple projects. They may also need to have flexible hours in order to accommodate communication with other members of their team and to adhere to tight project deadlines.
CGI Artists work with many different people. So, they need to have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. They must also be able to incorporate feedback from colleagues and superiors into their designs in order to make them stronger.
CGI Artist Software
CGI Artists use many different types of softwares and tools. But, they need to have proficiency in 3D modeling software such as:
- 3ds Max
- Adobe Creative Suite
And working knowledge in tools such as:
- Autodesk Revit Architecture
- Marvelous Designer
Important traits for a CGI Artist
CGI Artists need to have an excellent eye for composition, photo-realism, and lighting. They should have a good understanding of model optimization for real-time performance, 3D modeling, and scene ability. CGI Artists need to have strong time management skills and be effective communicators as they will work closely with many team members including project managers, art directors, and fellow artists.
